Urinary tract infection (cystitis)

Acute UTI is nowadays the second most common infection. UTI called cystitis by gynaecology experts affect mostly women, but men are not spared either. Up to 50% of female population encounter this problem.

Risk factors of urinary tract infection (cystitis)

Similarly to other infections the risk factor is poor hygiene. Bacteria dwelling in the rectum can easily transfer to urethra causing UTI unless the immune system is strong enough. The reason why women are more susceptible lies in a shorter distance between the rectum and urethra compared to men. A strict hygiene should be followed after sexual activities as they may pose another risk. Also urinary retention and inadequate fluid intake are both high-risk factors regarding the urinary tract. New mothers are more prone to UTI as their risk factor is a weak musculature due to childbirth. Even pregnant women and menopausal women are at greater risk of UTI. Diabetes belongs to another risk group, because urine provides a sweeter environment ideal for bacteria survival.

Signs and symptoms of urinary tract infection (cystitis)

A primary symptom of UTI is pain in the lower abdomen accompanied by frequent urination. Burning and sharp pain during urination may be unbearable. A typical sign of cystitis is then blood in urine as a consequence of irritated lining of the urinary tract. UTI presents with fever, and chills, back pain or discharge at advanced stages. If symptoms are detected early, UTI may be diagnosed and its course mitigated on time.

Preventing urinary tract infection (cystitis)

Every infection can be prevented particularly when following healthy hygiene habits. Even unsuitable underwear or harmful cosmetic products may trigger gynaecological inflammation. Effective prevention includes adequate fluid intake such as clear water and herbal teas, and this gives a good rinse to the urinary tract as it flushes out harmful bacteria. Healthy diet is essential for prevention of cystitis. Cranberries and blueberries or drinks made of this fruit have beneficial effect on the urinary tract and are widely recommended by experts. Anti-inflammatory properties of pineapple are another powerful defence against inflammation. A strong immune system is then optimal and it can be enhanced by many means.

Treatment of urinary tract infection (cystitis)

An antibiotic treatment for UTI is usually inevitable. Rest recommended by a doctor needs to be complemented by appropriate fluids, and urological teas may be added. When treating UTI, the focus should be on diet containing adequate amount of vitamin C and ideally anti-inflammatory cranberries and their extracts. Boosting the immune system by appropriate food supplements is essential for every infection.

Impact of the immune system on urinary tract infection (cystitis)

Similarly to other infections even UTI is accompanied by the weak immune system that needs to be targeted and enhanced. The immune system boost to prevent infection is the most effective way and this applies during the treatment too, particularly when using antibiotics that greatly weaken immunity.
